UPCOMING | RTI Webinar | The Inclusion Illusion

Join the Recovery Training Institute (RTI) for a one-hour webinar exploring The Inclusion Illusion and Navigating the Intersection of Disability, Addiction and Authentic Recovery.

Recovery does not occur in a vacuum.  For individuals navigating substance use disorders alongside disability, disability may manifest in deeply complex ways, whether a participant lives with a disability themselves, is the primary caregiver for a disabled child or family member, or lives with a disability caused by their addiction to themselves or others. These intersecting realities can create dense layers of trauma and unique challenges that traditional recovery and healthcare models cannot continue to treat in separate, isolated silos.

As the active noise of addiction may grow quiet through recovery, the unaddressed realities of disability may grow louder, revealing moving parts that require intentional, specialized support.  Tanya Salwach-Hoffert will challenge surface level, check-the-box practices, or what she calls the "Inclusion Illusion” and explore how to move forward beyond empty gestures toward an integrated, compassionate framework that holds space for every layer of the lived experience.

Presenter:

Tanya Salwach-Hoffert

Learning Objectives:

  • Examine the Duality: Understand how disability and addiction intersect, influence, and exacerbate one another while honouring the distinct realities of both conditions.
  • Deconstruct “The Inclusion Illusion”: Identify performative inclusion practices in healthcare, treatment centres, and recovery spaces, and open the conversation on how to replace them with authentic accessibility.
  • Dismantle Systemic Barriers: recognize the physical, attitudinal, and institutional obstacles that prevent disabled individuals from a accessing effective addiction recovery care.
  • Explore Intersectional Scenarios:  examine the diverse scenarios and ways disability and addiction intersect, analyzing the unique complexities each situation presents to achieving and maintaining successful recovery.
