Therapeutic Living Units

Therapeutic Living Units (TLUs) represent an innovative approach to addiction treatment within Alberta’s correctional facilities. With over 70% of inmates experiencing a substance use disorder — and the risk of overdose 129 times higher in the first week after release — TLUs address one of the most urgent challenges in the addiction crisis.

These specialized units provide a safe, structured, and recovery-focused environment where members live and learn together, supported by staff who often draw on their own lived experience of recovery. As part of Alberta’s Recovery-Oriented System of Care (ROSC), TLUs integrate addiction treatment, mental health services, healthcare, and community reintegration supports.

Grounded in compassion, accountability, and community-as-method, TLUs are redefining correctional care — helping individuals not only recover, but rebuild their lives with dignity, purpose, and hope.
